Intro
My name is Jeff Phillips and I am the owner/operator of HIS Construction LLC. I am based out of Great Falls, MT. I offer drafting, 3D modelling, and rendering services. I am proficient in SketchUp (modelling), LayOut (construction documentation), and Enscape (rendering/visualizations).
Work History
After high school and one year at a Bible school in the mountains of Montana, I entered the workforce as a laborer in the construction industry. I worked for a subcontractor who specialized in framing and foundations. For about 3 1/2 years I worked with the framing crew building homes in a couple of residential developments. The next 3 1/2 years we worked on several projects for the nearby Air Force Base, replacing and repairing foundations.
It was at this point that I teamed up with a good friend of mine and we each became subcontractors working for a local general contractor. Our primary focus was framing supplemented by some siding and metal roof installations. During this time, I picked up SketchUp and started tinkering with drawing up some of my own projects.
After subcontracting for 7 years, I decided to hang up my tool bags for a while and start drafting for Riverside Cabins, a modular cabin manufacturer. I picked up SketchUp and Layout books from both Nick Sonder and Michael Brightman and created a workflow heavily influenced by both. It was here that I was able to bring my experience in the field to the design phase of these modular cabin projects. I sought to learn from the framers, finishers, plumbers, and electricians how I could address their struggles early on in the design process. Through this collaboration we were able to discover and solve many issues long before the building physically took shape. Virtual “remodeling” on a computer screen is way faster and cheaper than cutting out joists and rafters on the shop floor.
During my time at Riverside Cabins, I was also involved with creating project management workflows, cost estimating, and pricing.
After nearly 5 years of drafting for Riverside Cabins, I decided to go out on my own and freelance.
Mission
My goal is to provide drafting and design services that:
- Accurately communicate the client’s vision to those making it a reality
- Give the client confidence in decision-making
- Are easy to read and understand by everyone from the client to the laborer to the trade partners.
